Frederik D.A. Paulsen

In addition to his devoted philanthropic efforts and environmental advocacy and exploration, Frederik Paulsen is a noted Polar Explorer who is the only person to have attained all eight poles. In 2007, Mr. Paulsen travelled 14,114 feet below sea level in a Russian Mir submersible to reach the ‘Real’ North Pole carrying Explorers Club Flag 42. He is also the first to have crossed the Bering Strait from Alaska to Russia in an ultralight aircraft. Other expeditions have included trips to the Baikal camp to study the chemistry of Baikal and Lake Geneva. He has also worked with scientists to investigate the cause of a series of wave deformations creating a neat row of five circles across Baikal’s surface.

As one of the few people to have stood on all eight of the Earth’s poles, Mr. Paulsen has a deep historical and scientific interest in polar exploration and in 2015 was a founding member of the Swiss Polar Institute. His worldwide philanthropic interests range from the islands of South Georgia, to Russia, Western Europe, the US and to the Kingdom of Bhutan, in the areas of culture, science and education. He is the recipient of numerous national honors, most recently in February 2016, he was awarded the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE).

Philanthropically, Mr. Paulsen’s efforts are far-reaching. His projects include opening fertility clinics throughout Russia, for which he was awarded the Order of Friendship. He also focuses on rat-eradication campaigns on South Georgia Island, is the foremost supporter of the Royal Textile Academy in Thimphu, and is responsible for creating Föhr’s Museum Kunst der Wëstkeuste.

Mr. Paulsen was elected as an Honorary Director of The Explorers Club in 2013 and is the founder of the Foundation Mamont – Explorers Club World Exploration Challenge, an initiative that helped support flag-worthy expeditions.
