Lee M. Talbot, Ph.D. MED’57


Dr. Lee Merriam Talbot’s contributions to the sciences, to exploration and to the advancement of human knowledge and welfare would seem to know no bounds. A pioneer of ecosystem science and its application, his ongoing commitment to the preservation and betterment of our planet is evidenced in his multitude of achievements. Professor Talbot has shaped national and international environmental policy as an environmental advisor to three U.S. Presidents and as head of Environmental Sciences for the Smithsonian Institution. He has been pivotal in shaping international environmental policy playing a significant role in authoring the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act.  Dr. Talbot was a major contributor to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species and he is a member of over twenty panels and committees of the National Academy of Science. As a Fellow of The Explorers Club for fifty-two years, he has led four recent flag expeditions and is a true embodiment of The Explorers Club’s highest ideals.
